The Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Francis Ben Kaifala Esq., has called on bloggers to use their platforms to advance the fight against corruption. Speaking at the launch of the Sierra Leone Association of Bloggers (SAB) on the 22nd January, 2024, at the New Brookfields Hotel, the Commissioner highlighted the evolution of communication in the digital era, emphasizing the influential role of bloggers as content creators shaping public discourse.
“When we wake up in the morning, the first thing we do is go for our devices that connect us to the world in seconds,” Kaifala said.
He acknowledged that social media has become a primary source of news and an essential tool for driving awareness and accountability.
The ACC Boss emphasized the Commission’s recognition of bloggers as vital partners in the dissemination of anti-corruption messages, endearing them to use their platforms responsibly to foster transparency, raise awareness, and promote good governance.
“Telling the positive stories of Sierra Leone is equally important, as it influences how the world views our country,” he added, pledging the ACC's full support to SAB.
First Lady of Sierra Leone, Her Excellency, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, who delivered the keynote address, echoed the importance of social media in advocacy. She highlighted its potential in addressing societal challenges such as gender-based violence, calling for collective efforts to empower bloggers to create impactful content while adhering to ethical and legal standards.
Earlier, Joseph Sannoh, the Founder and CEO of SAB in his statrement, said the initiative was inspired by the need to bring together the emerging group of influencers under one umbrella to foster their welfare, improve ethical standards, and enhance their impact. He revealed that the association has a well-drafted policy and strategic plan to guide its operations effectively.
The event, attended by bloggers, media practitioners, and key stakeholders, marks a significant step in driving societal change and fostering accountability which are factors that critically sit at the Commission’s aspirations to tackle corruption
