The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) wishes to inform the general public that Sierra Leone has, again, scored very high score (74 percent) in the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) ‘Control of Corruption’ Indicator, making it seven (7) consecutive years of remarkable progress in the country’s score in the MCC Scorecard since 2018.
Sierra Leone has consistently recorded outstanding scores in the MCC ‘Control of Corruption’ Scorecard, withabove 70 percent score since 2018, having failed the indicator in 2017 with 49 percent. Not just has the hitherto failing score been exponentially improved on since 2018, it represents a streak of 7 years of continuous passes and improvements, which symbolizes the Country’s resolve and determination aimed at corruption control since 2018. It must be recalled that the country had never passed the mandatory ‘control of corruption’ indicator in the previous years, back-to-back, but has achieved this landmark success in 7 consecutive years-2018-2024.
Sierra Leone’s score in the ‘Control of Corruption’ indicator in 2024 (or FY 2025 as MCC prefers it) shows that it is ahead of many other countries including, Ivory Coast which scored 63 percent, Ghana scored 70 percent, Nigeria45 percent; Mali 60 percent;Guinea 55 percent; Liberia 57 percent; Cameroon 38 percent; Mozambique 62 percent; Egypt 30 percent; Malawi 72 percent, etc. Therefore, by this year’s Report, and for 7 years consecutively,Sierra Leone is among the top ten performers in our income category; one of the best performers in Africa; and number one in the Mano River Union.
In the same vein, in the last six years, Sierra Leone has also unprecedently and consistently scored high in other global, regional, and domestic anti-corruption rankings. Sierra Leone has moved 22 places upwards in the Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index 2023 and scored its highest of 35, above the Sub-saharan average to be positioned at 108, from 130 in 2017.Additionally, the 2021/23 Afro-Barometer Survey Report Round 9, covering 39 countries ranked Sierra Leone Government’s Performance in fighting corruption with a score of 58%, far above the 39-country average of 29%. Sierra Leone also ranked as one of the only 6 African countries with majority approval of their Government’s stellar performance in fighting corruption. Importantly also, in the Mo Ibrahim Index of African Governance 2024, Sierra Leone is in the top ten on the Governance scorecard for the most improved countries in Governance progress 2014-2023, with the fight against corruption standing out prominently. Sierra Leone increased its score in Anti-Coruption Mechanisms to 54.5 and ranked 7 out of the 54 African Countries, above the African and West African Averages.
The Commission wishes to reassure the general public of its unwavering determination to continue effective corruption control in the country. For further enquiries on this and other ACC matters, please contact Alex A. Bah, the Public RelationsAssistant on +232-78-004714.
