ACC ENGAGES RESIDENTS OF NORTH-WEST REGION ON PAY NO BRIBE CAMPAIGN
As part of the Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) community outreach campaign, the Public Education and Outreach Department on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th October 2018, conducted a mass sensitization campaign in the Townships of Port Loko, Kambia, Gbere Junction, Lunsar and Foredugu in the North-West Region.
The objective of the campaign was to enhance public awareness on the devastating effects of corruption towards community development and educate the public in the targeted locations on the Pay No Bribe campaign and their roles in the campaign.
In her statement, Communications Consultant ACC, Olabisi Garrick admonished the people to report any suspected incidents of corruption to the ACC. She encouraged them to always utilize the 515 (all networks) PNB free reporting line.
In her address to residents of Port Loko, Communications Officer ACC, Margaret Jones, admonished her audience, including market women, to resist acts of corruption in their dealings and reports experiences of corruption whilst accessing public services. She said reporting acts of corruption and bribery will help the Commission’s intervention in combating graft.
The chairlady for the Market Women in Port Loko District Madam Fatu Kanu appealed to her colleagues to utilize the knowledge gained in a bid to improve services in their communities.
She highlighted some of the corruption issues affecting them including payment for bail, exorbitant fines in the local courts and pleaded with the Commission to look into these issues.
In Barmoi Luma, Gbere Junction and Lunsar, residents welcomed the ACC staff for the engagement, which they described as first of its kind. They pledged their support to the PNB campaign, but raised concerns over payment for report cards and admission in some schools in Lunsar, and high charges to reconnect water and electricity.
The Civil Society Representative from Campaign for Good Governance (CGG) David John told the community people that the PNB campaign also provides an application which enables citizens to report acts of bribery in their local languages.
The campaign also involved performances by the Makeni Comedians who accompanied the ACC team.
